This recipe will please your family and guests whether you serve it as an appetizer or dinner. The honey mustard sauce made at home is the perfect accompaniment to the tender and seasoned chicken.
Ingredients:
For the Chicken Tenders
- 1 lb skinless and boneless chicken breasts (cut in strips)
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon of garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon of onion powder
- Half a teaspoon of salt
- Black pepper, 1/2 teaspoon
- 2 large eggs, beaten
- 1 cup panko breadcrumbs (or regular breadcrumbs)
- Parmesan cheese, 1/4 cup
- Vegetable Oil (for Frying)
Honey Mustard Sauce
- 1/4 cup Dijon mustard
- 1/4 cup honey
- 1 tablespoon mayonnaise
- Lemon juice, optional (for extra tang).
- Salt and pepper pinch
Instructions:
1. Prepare the chicken:
- To ensure consistent cooking, cut the chicken breasts into strips that are about 1 inch wide.
2. Install the breading station:
- Combine the flour with the paprika powder, garlic powder and onion powder in a shallow bowl. Add salt and pepper.
- Beat the eggs in a shallow bowl.
- Combine the grated Parmesan and panko breadcrumbs in a shallow third bowl.
3. Coat the chicken:
- Each chicken strip should be coated completely with the flour-seasoning mixture. Shake any excess flour.
- Dip the chicken floured in the beaten egg, letting any excess drip off.
- Cover the chicken with the mixture of breadcrumbs, pressing gently on the chicken to adhere to the breadcrumbs. Place the chicken on a tray or plate and set aside.
4. Fried Chicken:
- In a large skillet, heat about 1/4 inch vegetable oil over medium-high heat. When the oil reaches 350degF (or 175degC), it is ready.
- Cook the chicken in batches to avoid overcrowding the pan. Cook the chicken for 3-4 minutes on each side or until it is golden brown.
- To drain the excess oil, remove the chicken tenders and place them onto a plate lined with paper towels.
5. Honey Mustard Sauce:
- In a small mixing bowl, combine the Dijon mustard with honey, mayonnaise (if you are using it), lemon juice, salt and pepper. Whisk until well combined.
6. Serve:
- Arrange the crispy tenders on a platter. Serve the chicken tenders hot, with homemade honey mustard sauce as a dip.
Tip and variations:
- Air Fryer: If you want a lighter version of this recipe, air fry the tenders for 8-10 mins, turning them over halfway, until they are golden brown and cooked through.
- Add Spice: For a little extra spice, you can add some hot sauce to your honey mustard sauce. Or sprinkle some cayenne pepper on the breadcrumb mix.
- Prepare ahead: Before frying, you can freeze the chicken tenders. Coat them, place them on a baking tray in one layer, and then freeze. Once frozen, could you place them in a freezer bag? Fry them when you are ready.
- Baking Option: Bake the chicken tenders at 400degF for 15-20 minutes. Flip them halfway through.
