Chicken Shawarma
This is one of my favourite recipes, and I’m sure all my friends will know it as I make it so often. All you need is a few spices, a little garlic, some lemon and olive oil to make a delicious meal.
It was through the smell of chicken cooking that I first met my neighbours in the complex where I lived. People who had never met me before would peek over the fence to ask what I was making. They were delighted when I offered them a sample.
What exactly is Chicken Shawarma?
Shawarma is a famous Middle Eastern dish. The dish is made by stacking spiced meats vertically and slicing them thinly as the rotisserie turns. Don’t worry; Your can be cooked horizontally in a pan or on the grill.
Shawarma is made with lamb, mutton, or chicken. You can also find it with beef. It’s usually served in a wrap. In other countries, it may be served on a platter with Rice, salads or seasoned fries.
Ingredients in Chicken Shawarma
This is what you’ll need to make Chicken Shawarma. Most of the spices are already in your pantry.
- Chicken tenderloin or breast works well.
- Fresh Lemon Juice
- Add a bit of flavour to the chicken with olive oil, but dilute it with lemon juice so that it doesn’t “cook” the meat.
- Spices: Cardamom, a citrusy and piney spice that is available in most supermarkets today, is the only one you might not have. It is a key ingredient in the Shawarma Marinade and can be used to differentiate it from other cuisines like Mexican.

How To Make Chicken Shawarma
For the best results, marinate the chicken overnight. This marinade is so potent and intense that you can marinate chicken in as little as three hours. No one has ever complained.
- Mix marinade. Mix marinade.
- Add chicken to marinade. Remove any excess air from the bag and massage it to coat. Allow the marinade to sit in the fridge for 12-24 hours. If you’re pressed for time, 3 hours will do.
- Combine the ingredients and let them sit in the fridge for up to three days.
- Cooking chicken on the grill or stovetop will produce a delicious aroma and a crust. This is a mouth-watering experience!
- Rest the chicken for at least 3 minutes before serving. The juices will be redistributed in the meat. If you don’t, the juices will leak out when you slice the meat.
- Arrange everything on a large plate. Everyone can make their wraps with chicken, lettuce, tomato and onion. You can use homemade or store-bought flatbreads.
How to Serve Chicken Shawarma
There are two main ways to serve Chicken Shawarma.
- Wraps – As Chicken Shawarma, with lettuce, tomato, and a simple sauce of yoghurt on the side. Additional extras include cheese, red onions (question authenticity, But it’s fine! ), hummus, or hot sauce/chilli sauce.
- Shawarma with Rice, salads and flatbreads. I usually serve pita bread or flatbreads with this recipe.
- Mejadra is Middle Eastern lentil rice (so delicious, you could eat the whole bowl by yourself! Middle Eastern Chickpea Salad. I don’t season the chickpeas as it is too hot.
