Chicken Nuggets
Chicken Nuggets
These easy chicken nuggets are something I cook a lot, so they are my son’s favorite, and I love them too! I coat them with potato chips and bake them until they are crispy to make it easier.
This recipe only requires three ingredients! To make cleanup easier, I bake the chicken nuggets instead of frying in oil.
Key Ingredients
- I used both breasts and legs for this recipe. The chicken thighs are more tender, but they both taste great!
- Potato Chips: Use your favorite kind! For extra flavor, so I like dill pickle and sour cream with onion. This is a great gluten-free recipe because it uses potato chips (although I recommend checking to see if the package has been GF certified).
- As a result of the egg, the crushed potato chips adhere to the chicken better. We’ll use a beaten yolk instead of the usual breading with flour, eggs, and breadcrumbs.
How to make chicken nuggets at home
To make the potato chip-crusted nuggets I made, you must cut your chicken into small nuggets and then dip them in a whisked egg (or egg whites).
Bake until crispy. In the recipe, I have included some tips on how to make these in an air fryer!
The homemade chicken nuggets are so easy to make! Serve them with fries or your favorite sauce, so here are our crispy French fries and our favorite sweet potato fries recipes, so don’t forget to make the homemade fry sauce.

Stop buying frozen nuggets from the store! The secret to this kid-approved homemade chicken nugget is the crispy potato chip coating.
This recipe makes 4 servings.
What You Will Need
Skinless and boneless 1 1/4 pound (566g) chicken breasts or thighs
5 ounces (141g) of favorite potato chips, 3 heaping cups
1 large egg; see notes
Olive oil or nonstick cooking spray
Directions
Preheat the oven to 400degF. Make sure your baking pan is lined with parchment paper or foil. Alternatively, so you can use a silicone baking mat, then use an air fryer as described below.
Roll a rolling pin over the chips and add them to a bag that can be sealed. Add the potato chips to a food processor and pulse until they are crumbled, then add the crushed potato chips to a large bowl.
A separate dish should be used for beating the eggs.
Cut the chicken into pieces of 1 inch (about 24 pieces).
5 Dip a piece in the egg with one hand, then remove any extra egg from nuggets to prevent them from becoming soggy. With your other hand, roll the chicken in the potato chips, and then place it on the baking sheet. The process should be repeated for all chicken pieces.
Use nonstick cooking spray or olive oil to coat the chicken.
7 Bake the chicken for 15 minutes. Flip it over and bake another 8-12 minutes until an internal thermometer is inserted into the chicken.
Air Fryer Nuggets
1 Arrange the chicken nuggets, coated with the coating, in an even layer in your air fryer basket. They can be lightly sprayed with cooking spray. Air fry for four minutes at 390degF. Shake the basket and spray lightly again. Then, air fry for 3 to 5 more minutes (or until golden).
Tips for Chicken Nuggets
Storage: Keep leftover nuggets in an airtight container for up to four days. You can freeze the nuggets after cooling them on a baking sheet for about an hour. Transfer them into an airtight container and freeze them for up to three months. To reheat the food, you can either bake it in a 400degF preheated oven for 10-15 minutes or air fry it at 390degF between 4 and 7 minutes.
Most of the time, one egg will suffice, then add a second one to the bowl if you are out of eggs.
Insert a wire rack in a baking sheet with a rim to get crispier nuggets. The nuggets can be baked on top of the rack, so the chicken does not need to be flipped, as air circulates around it.
